Last Revised: Oct. 17th 2008
Art Therapy, so what is it?
Art Therapy is a form of alternate therapy in which a person expresses feelings through a nonverbal process like creating art. A trained professional observes the process and comments accordingly as well as drawing up an assessment of the clients needs and how to improve their mental health. The belief is that through art people can communicate fears, and other subconscious problems that they may have not been able to formulate verbally.
Who is Art Therapy For?
Anyone from young children to senior citizens can benefit from Art Therapy. The creative process has the ability to improve mental health and increase self awareness while reducing the daily stresses of life. Art Therapy can be used to treat a variety of emotional conditions, learning disorders, depression and even autism. You do not need to be a master painter to benefit from art healing, the opportunity to explore and gain personal insight is open to anyone willing to try an alternate form of natural therapy.
Who are Art Therapists?
Art Therapists must be sensitive patient people that have an insight into human behavior and understanding of art. They must complete a core curriculum stated in the AATA Education Standards to be certified to preform art therapy. A Master’s degree in art therapy is highly recommended to gain entry into the profession. Art Therapists are focused individuals that use art as their main tool to better one’s life.
