Conference Information

The experience of being in the present, with a sharpened and heightened clarity, can be an effortless, simple process. It does require, however, that we give up the fixed way in which we have learned to look at our world. By paying attention to the here and now, to observing one's thoughts without being critical or judgmental is what many call mindfulness. By not limiting our options and having different perspectives we are engaged in mindfulness. To understand that other people may not be so different allows us to empathize and enlarges our range of responses, making us less likely to feel locked into a polarized struggle. In addition, when we apply this to our own behavior, change becomes more possible. This ability to transcend context is the essence of mindfulness and central to the creative process.

In our commitment to make the benefits and power of art therapy known to as broad a range of the population as possible, the MPS Art Therapy Department at the School of Visual Arts is proud to have as our keynote speaker best-selling author Ellen Langer, who will be speaking about the of mindfulness. In addition to Dr. Langer, the conference will feature two special guest speakers, Dr. David Gonzalez and Dr. Patricia Isis. It will be a dynamic day with three strong speakers exploring art therapy's role in understanding the concept of mindfulness and how it pertains to one's own work and everyday life.
